Southern Transdanubia
is bordered by the Danube and Drava. It is a region
of forests and valleys. Pécs in southern Transdanubia
is a delightful city with many elegant Art Nouveau buildings,
as well as surviving mosques from the 150 year period
of Turkish occupation which followed the disastrous
defeat of the Magyars at the Battle of Mohács.
The hilly region south of Pécs should also appeal,
particularly to wine lovers, with the marvellous Villány
Siklos wine road yielding some superlative reds,
whilst a short trip west of Pecs is Szigetvar, renowned
for its castle and Turkish ruins. Although the Volgyseg,
the valley region between Lake Balaton and the Mecsek
Hills. Szekszard is the most appealing small town in
the region, within reach of the lovely Forest of Gemenc,
part of the Duna-Drava National Park.
